Having successfully completed the first phase of the project, Blackwell was awarded the contract for the construction of the Northern section of the Clyde wind farm. These works are accessed from the end of the North enabling works, an advanced works contract also completed by Blackwell and includes the construction of a further 27 turbine bases. Whilst there are fewer turbines than the south site, the topography and layout of this site provide an even more challenging environment for construction. Works are programmed to be completed within a single season, thus permitting WTG erection to commence prior to the winter period.
Key Processes:
The main elements of the works include the following:
- Destumping of large areas of previously forested areas.
- Developing and implementing an ecological mitigation plan with the Employer's ECOW and SEPA
- Stripping approximately 200,000 cu.m of peat and topsoil and storing in accordance with the agreed peat management plan.
- Bulk earthworks including the excavation of over 400,000 cu.m of soils and rock and the placement of this material as embankment fill.
- Construction of a 500m length of floating road over tracts of deep peat.
- Site batching of over 10,000 cu.m of concrete
- Construction of 27 turbine foundations and 2 anemometer bases.
- On site crushing of rock to form approximately 20km of new on site roads.
- Drainage and silt mitigation measures
- Earthworks and processing of site.
- Fencing and reinstatement works.
