Hanningfield Reed Bed case study

The construction of the innovative reed beds at Hanningfield Water Treatment Works was awarded to Blackwell by Essex and Suffolk Water Limited who are owned by Northumbrian Water Limited.

The new reed-beds system will enable the sludge, which has been produced from water treatment, to be dewatered for disposal with a resulting significant reduction in carbon footprint whilst also providing a new habitat for wildlife.

The project is programmed to be completed in September 2012

Key Processes:

The main elements of the scheme include:

  • Diversion of an existing sludge main
  • Creation of 16 individual reed-beds with each reed-bed having a surface area of 2,720 m2 and a nominal depth of 2.4m
  • Installation of butt-fused polyethylene pipe work
  • Installation of U- pvc pipe work
  • Installation of pit and duct system
  • Construction of site building for monitoring and telemetry equipment and operator welfare
  • Installation of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls and Automation Systems
  • Construction of vehicular access
