Poole Link Road case study

  • 1-20-2012

Construction of an approach road for the new £37M Iconic Twin Sails Bridge in Poole Harbour, which will connect Hamworthy and Poole. The works comprise of widening and reconstruction of existing highway and the construction of a new link road including a new signalised junction, deep drainage, retaining wall and embankment with associated earthworks. A number of private and commercial premises require both vehicular and pedestrian access during construction, requiring Blackwell to put a Traffic Management system in place.

Key Processes:

The main elements of the works include the following:

  • Earthworks comprising of approx 30,000 tons of imported class 1A fill and sub-base which consisted of approx 25,000 tons of recycled incinerator ash, this material was produced at a local household waste recycling facility in Southampton processed through the incinerator and imported to site, the use of household waste and incinerator ash is a relatively new concept and is a very good construction material with minimal impact on the environment
  • Installation of 3M deep 1200mm diameter storm water carrier drain
  • 200M x 2.5M high reinforced concrete retaining wall
  • 10,000M² of carriageway surfacing
  • Demolition of existing properties
  • Diversion of various utilities and installation of new supplies for proposed re-development
  • Re-alignment of existing highway junction which incorporated a multi-faced traffic and pedestrian management system
  • Construction of Tree Pit systems and elaborate street scene which included a high specification finish with granite kerbs, channels and paving
  • Installation of new street lighting scheme consisting of 65 no 10M high bespoke galvanised lighting columns
  • Construction of a 1400M combined footway and cycleway
