Our People

The management team of Blackwell is made up of a blend of operational, commercial and financial expertise to provide leadership based on first hand experience and a honed knowledge of risk and reward assessments.

Steve Clarke - Managing Director Steve has been with Blackwell for many years after training as a civil engineer and has worked progressively from site manager to Managing Director as a result of his expertise in resource management. Steve’s main role is in the determination of the business strategy but he retains the responsibility in plant and equipment purchase from his former role as Contracts Director.

Guy Pugh - Deputy Managing and Commercial Director Guy joined Blackwell in 1984 as a chartered civil engineer having spent his earlier years as a structural designer and project manager for new mines in South Africa. Guy has worked as both contracts manager and commercial manager before being appointed to the board in 1996. Since then he has been involved in the diversification of the business into new regions and activities. 2010 promoted to Deputy MD and Commercial Director. Also Director of the subsidiary and associated companies of HBR, RLR, and Masterton.

Keith Gooday - Company Secretary & Financial Director Keith has been with Blackwell since 1972 and was appointed Financial Director in 1987. Keith is a Group and (Contracts) Board Director and Company Secretary. He also sits on the boards of the majority of the subsidiary / associate companies either as Director or Company Secretary. He is responsible for the overall control of the financial administration of the Group. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Paul Smith - Director Paul has been with Blackwell since 1973 having joined as a site quantity surveyor. After many years travelling with the site teams, Paul opened the South Wales regional office in Swansea from which he promoted early ventures into civil engineering infrastructure projects. Paul was promoted to the Board in 1996 and is responsible for the South Western region.

Steve Johnson - Director Steve joined Blackwell in 1990 and worked on various earthworks, civil engineering and remediation schemes before establishing and running the Northern Regional Office in Wakefield in 1999. Most recently Steve has been responsible for developing Blackwell's presence in Scotland and also within the renewable energy market. He was appointed Director in 2010 and is also a Director of Renaissance Land Regeneration.

Niall Fraser - Director Niall is responsible for the South and East Region. He has worked for Blackwell on major earthworks and civil engineering contracts across the UK since 1988 and as extensive experience of the operational and contractual organisation of major earthworks led construction schemes, during both the pre-construction and construction phases. Niall gained his RICS chartership in 1997 and graduated from the University of Reading in 1992. Niall's particular interest lies with earthmoving plant selection and techniques and he has worked closely with many of the UK's leading geotechnical consultants.

Bill Kettyle - Associate Director Bill joined Blackwell in 1979 as a quantity surveyor and has worked on many challenging schemes around the UK including civil engineering, earthworks and remediation as commercial or general manager. In 2006 Bill was appointed Associated Director and represents Blackwell’s commercial interests on the boards of Geofirma and CLC.

Ian Saville - Associate Director Ian, as a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, joined Blackwell in 2002 - having gained 16 years previous experience within the UK service sector. He has been heavily involved from a financial perspective in all the Group's acquisitions along with implementation of financial, and other IT systems, throughout Blackwell. In 2012, Ian was appointed as the Associate Finance Director and Company Secretary of a number of the subsidiary companies along with C A Blackwell (Contracts) Ltd.

David Salmon - Associate Director David joined Blackwell in 1999. He is a Chartered Surveyor and since leading the commercial team at Heathrow Terminal 5 has worked on numerous projects in the UK and Europe. He has significant experience in heavy earthmoving, tunnelling, remediation, general civils and building. He is a member of the Blackwell Group Health and Safety Leadership Team and is also the Commercial Director of HBR Limited, a subsidiary of Blackwell.

Philip George - Non-executive Chairman Phillip is the non-executive Chairman, appointed by the executive directors to provide an independent input into business governance and risk management
